I drove down to Atlanta on Friday for a convention at the Mariott Marquis hotel. I met up with Bleu Hayes at his booth to sell media services to chiropractors. Bleu has been doing video work since mid-college and had a couple infomercials to sell. I had my web design samples on display, and talked with some interested doctor's, seven of them actually. I'll be sending them more information and some materials, so hopefully a few of them will want to get something going quickly.
I also talked with the director of AMC, the consulting company that Bleu affiliates with who hosts the convention, about my work and about how he may have some work for me as well. He said he was looking into using Joomla to create websites and applications and was interested in using me to create graphics for it. We also found it fun to learn that we'd both lived in Springfield, MO, are fans of the Vineyard Chattanooga, and share the same interested in web/graphic/animation design.
It's crazy thinking about working with these doctors. They wore nametags for the convention that had what they earned on them, and later Bleu told me the figure reflected what they make monthly. Some of these people make 50k per month! Whoah! What in the world? That's crazy. "Please give me some of that to build a website for you." Or you can donate it, whichever you like.
Hopefully I will hear back from some of these folks who seemed very interested in the information I had to share with them, at the least. I'm getting really excited to be working with Bleu and with Green Apple Media. This week I will be working to get a new design for this site finalized and to start building it. I'm still playing around with new logo ideas.
I felt good as I drove back from Atlanta Friday evening. Even though sometimes I get ahead of myself or I hope for opportunities that don't really play out as I want them to, I thought to myself, "Self, this could be my big break. Surely this has potential to be the Design Endeavor I've been hoping for since years and years ago. Something where I really can use all of my areas of talent (and learning new areas of talent via the video aspect of Green Apple), doing work I enjoy and getting paid what I'm worth." I'm not sure if I should be celebrating or continuing to "hang in there."
In other project-related news..
I've got a wedding invitation project for a gal who used to be my sister's supervisor. I produced a design that she absolutely loves, so we're working on getting it printed now. I really enjoy designing invitations, and when I've had a lot of technical web design work, it's refreshing to come back to print design.
Also (and aside from chiropractor web design business) Bleu came to me about illustrating a storyboard for a commercial he's planning with a local company called Knetwit (which I had done some work with before). I'm really excited about this, because he's opened up the project to me to do some art direction, as well as to learn shooting and editing.
Missy - this sounds wonderful. I wish you lots of luck. One suggestion - if you got the doctors names and address you might want to send a follow up or a thank you card for stopping by your both or something like that. Keep up the great work. Rox
ReplyDeleteJust realized in my 1st comment that I spelled booth both. Sorry. Since I can't work on the computers very long because of my hands and arms I'm not able to stay up the latest and greatest computer activities. Rox
